final project and reflection

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/23684881/

I began my final project by deciding what I wanted to the objective of the game to be and what characters I wanted. Then once I knew the basics of the game I just worked on one level at a time and tried to incorporate each element on the rubric. When I would encounter a problem, which I did a lot, I kept troubleshooting until I diagnosed the problem.

ideas for game

I plan on making my game about monkeys swinging trying to get bananas to eat. Each new level it will get harder by having obstacles and I will also change the background each new level. Also, you will be able to pass each level by getting a certain amount of points and that amount of points will increase each level. I may also introduce new characters throughout the game too. The game will end by finding the other monkey.

debug-it

 #1
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/23545794/
To fix the program you need to drag the define meow block from scratch cat to Gobo and drag the meow sound from scratch cat to Gobo.

#2
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/23546158/
To fix this program you need to drag the blue answer block into the repeat block where 0 was.

#3
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/23546336/
To fix this program you need to move the who's here block under time for roll call block. Then you move the broadcast blocks under each name it goes to and then add wait blocks between every say block. You also add wait blocks after the when I receive blocks on each of the other sprites.

#4
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/23546746/
To fix this program you add a broadcast jump block under the jump block.

#5
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/23546948/
To fix this program you add a when green flag clicked block to the dinosaur and a hide block under it. Then you switch the when backdrop switches to auditorium and add a show block under that.

Reflection:
To debug I didn't have a specific strategy other than to try something and test it out and if it didn't work then to try something else. I would help someone learn how to debug a project by teaching them the basics of scratch because once you are very familiar with the blocks and the program itself, finding the problems becomes easy.

try it #7

I worked on puzzles 1, 7 and 8. My strategy for solving them was to try something and then test it and if it didn't work then I would try a new technique. The first  and 7th puzzle helped me think about my game project because those are things that would happen during a game.

stage

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/23392514/

The stage goes along with the actions of the sprites. In my script, the sprites control the background and their actions influence the changing of the backgrounds. In a scene you initialize sprites by using the when the background changes block. Other types of projects that would use scene changes would be games.

Broadcast

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/23298218/
I would describe broadcast to someone else by saying that it is a more straightforward way of making a conversation back and forth between sprites. Instead of using the wait blocks and having it be messy you use the broadcast and receive blocks which make talking back and forth a lot smoother and cleaner. When one sprite says something that you want another sprite to respond to, you simply put the broadcast block after what one sprite said and then on the other sprite you use the receive block and then what they respond with.

Make a Block

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/22978154/

"Make a Block" is when you put a series of actions under one block with one name and then use that block to do a series of actions. It takes up less space in the script. You might use "Make a Block" when you have a long series of actions in order and they are making up one larger action such as dancing. It is really convenient.

Debug it

In order to debug I didn't have a specific strategy. Basically what we did was use the knowledge about scratch that we already had and solve the problems. For example when one of the sprites wasn't dancing but the other was, I knew that you could click on the different sprites to see their movements so that is what I did. I would recommend to someone else learning how to debug a project that you watch the videos before so you know how to use scratch and then that knowledge will help you to debug.

Debug it 5

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/22925429/
You put the play sound and say meow blocks inside the repeat block and you put play sound before say meow

Debug it 4

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/22925142/
You add a set rotation style left-right block underneath if on the edge, bounce.

Debug it 3

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/22924951/
You change the first degree to 360 to get the cat to do a flip when you hit the space bar.

Debug it 2

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/22924577/
We put a repeat block around the movements and then added a glide to -170,28 under "I like the right side too!"

Debug it 1

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/22924216/
We highlighted Gobo and then put a green flag to the beginning.

10 Block Challenge

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/22867966/#player
The 10 Block Challenge was a challenge. It was hard to just use only the 10 blocks and then make the sprite do what you want. The videos on how to do the challenge really helped me to understand the different blocks and what they do so then I could put them together to create something. I would never have used blocks such as hide or show so that was a plus of the challenge. While it was frustrating, I learned a lot about scratch.

Unit 4 Day 1

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/22810759/ I was surprised that there was so much you can do in Scratch and that there are so many different blocks for different actions. I enjoyed being led step by step through the activity because it made it easier to understand. Since the tutorial showed exactly what to do I learned while doing it. When I am not familiar with something and I am just learning how to do it I like to have more structure. When I know what I am doing and am familiar with it I like to have more freedom. I feel most creative when I have freedom.

Webmaker

I really enjoyed doing the different activities on webmaker.org. I thought it was really cool and interesting how you can change part of the code and its like you were hacking and making it all your own. You could make things so personal just by changing part of the code and adding your own pictures. I can't imagine how actual hackers know exactly what part of the code to change for certain things to happen because without the guidelines I wouldn't have been able to change things on my own.

webpages

I like current news webpages about what's going on in pop culture with celebrities. I also like webpages about music and sports.I find it interesting to read webpages about movies as well and good popular movies that are out. Overall I just really like webpages about current pop culture because that is some of my favorite stuff to read about and be up to date on. I am thinking about creating a webpage about music that I like and my favorite songs.

Hour of Code

The first tutorial I did was Angry Birds and it was my favorite. I liked how it was a game that was pretty challenging and really got you to think. Every time you messed up you had to start over again which was annoying but other than that it was fun. The second tutorial was lightbot which was very similar to Angry Birds because you had to maneuver something through a sort of maze. This tutorial was different though because when you messed up you didn't have to start over which was nice. The last tutorial was the holiday card. I did not like this at all because unlike the others it wasn't really a game so it was kind of boring. Overall I really enjoyed coding.

Computer Buying Project

The result of my project was that I chose to buy the MacBook Pro rather than a PC. I chose a Mac over a PC really because I have a Mac and I have had a PC before and my Mac is hands down the best computer. I think the best things about Macs is that the Apple store and the people who work there are so smart and nice that when you have a problem with your computer you can go there right away and they can do almost anything to help you and they get it down very quickly as well. Great customer service. Also, Macs don't crash half as often as PCs do. When I had a PC it would crash almost every day but I think my Mac has only crashed twice. I think Macs are much easier to use as well especially if you have any other Apple products. Most Apple products work the same way and have the same applications. Another thing is that if you have other Apple products, a Mac would be a better choice because it is set up to work with iPhone and iPods and other Apple products.Lastly, even though Macs are much more expensive, I feel that you are getting your moneys worth with the great quality of hardware and computer in general.

Olympics

I really enjoyed watching the 2k14 winter olympics in Sochi Russia and I am sad that they are over. My favorite event to watch is snowboarding and my favorite snowboarders are Sage Kotsenburg from the US and Mark McMorris from Canada. Kotsenburg won the gold medal in slopestyle and McMorris won the bronze medal in slopstyle. I also loved watching ice dancing and Meryl Davis and Charlie White win the gold medal for the US. Hockey is the most exciting event in the olympics by far though. I was so upset that the mens US team didn't win a medal because they did so well. The best moment of the whole Olympics was definitely when TJ Oshie won the game against Russia in the shootout for the US. After that I definitely thought the US would win a medal. It was great though that the US women's hockey team won the silver medal although it would have been nice for them to beat Canada. Overall the 2k14 winter olympics were very exciting and a big success.

Google Tips and Tricks

I have learned many tricks about Google in computer apps that can be helpful to me when I'm searching Google everyday. I think the most interesting thing that I have learned would be the "search by image" tool that lets you put an image into the Google search and you can find out what the image is and other things about it. Last night when I was doing my history project I had a picture that I needed to know the name of and other information about what was going on in it so I used this tool. Another great tip that I learned was "filetype" which allows you to search for only specific files such as power point or PDF files. This is helpful when I am trying to study and I want a power point about a topic.

Power Searching With Google

In class one of power searching with Google I learned two important skills of filtering image results by color and finding text on a webpage. When you are looking for a certain color image and you don’t want to have to scroll through hundreds of pictures of colors you don’t want to find the color you do want, you can simply click the color you want on the panel on the left side. This saves time but it also helps to search for information that is only available to the eye. Finding text on a webpage is one of the most time saving tools. Once you have found the webpage that is going to give you your information that you are looking for, you may have to scroll down way to many pages searching for that information. If you just use control-F and then type the word or phrase you are looking for into the box that appears, it will show you where that is on the webpage and a lot of your time has been saved.
In class two of power searching with Google I learned two more important skills of when search results suggest something new and different kinds of content. Let’s say you didn’t know how to spell something but you wanted to search it in Google. If you type in the wrong spelling then Google will give you the correct spelling and ask if you want to search that instead. Also Google gives you related searches at the bottom of the page that could also be helpful. Also, aside from images and videos Google also has scholar, blogs, patents, 3d objects, discussions, books and finance. If you are looking for scholarly information about grasshoppers you can click more on the bar at the top of the screen and then go to scholar. You can do the same if you want blogs about grasshoppers just by clicking on blogs.
In class three of power searching with Google I learned two skills of filetype and removing invasive results. Filetype allows you to only search for information in certain types of files such as powerpoint, pdf files or excel files. Just by typing “filetype:PPT” after your search you can get results only in powerpoints. Removing invasive results is helpful if your search has multiple meanings and you are only interested in a certain one. If you search salsa but you aren’t interested in the food then you could search “salsa –food” and that would not be part of the search results.
